About Who We Are

***Also, check out 1881's first album, "Brick & Mortar" here: http://cdbaby.com/1881. Its unique industrial rock sound has gotten rave reviews.***

1881’s got this sound that you can’t put your finger on but you can move your body to. Then there’s introspective, soulful vocals and lyrics with a unique approach that helps to set 1881 apart from bands that may somehow sneak into 1881’s self-proclaimed genre: Electro-Funk-Rock. Instrumentally, the band alludes to the adroit yet detached vocals and beats of Soul Coughing, the smoky jazz gothicity that is Morphine, and the textured breaks and sound collages of DJ Shadow. In 1881, there are beats, synth, guitar and sax contrasting and complimenting, while the lyrics paint personal and social critiques and empowerment.

"The beauty of "Who We Are" is the fact that each song highlights a different aspect of what 1881 is all about. From ear-catching hip-hop beats to the guitar solos, it's all there. Listeners can take refuge in this fresh and diverse combination of sounds."
-Josh Herzog - OnMilwaukee.com

"I hear a style. You guys are really talented. Voice is great, music is great, production is great."
-Ruvin Spivak - Scout for Columbia Records

"People who say Milwaukee isn't on music's cutting edge haven't heard 1881."
-Gemma Tarlach - Entertainment Editor for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

"...one of the best new dance-techno-rock bands to spill out of the Beer City.."
-Peter Braun - Editor of Svoid Magazine

"They are soon to be the next big thing in Rock Music......Their music is truly different than anything that is out there right now, and their fan base is always growing. They would be a major add to the big gig!!"
-Advent Magazine - from Summerfest.com Band Suggestions Forum

“All That Matters - Clean production..nice use of ambiance. Reminds me of something i would hear watching any of the 'Oceans" movies. Great job in capturing the vibe.”
